Fishermen's Forum ~ Friday, March 26. 2010

2010 Fishermen's Forum Conference Speakers Notes
2010 Fishermen's Forum Conference Speaker Notes.

The Gulf Aquarium and Marine Station would like to thank everyone who attended and contributed to the success of the Second Annual Fishermen’s Forum “Moving towards Sustainability in Rural Fishing Communities” on March 26, 2010 in Cheticamp NS.

The forum was well attended with twelve speakers from around the maritimes presenting a wide range of topics relating to marine resources. The discussion and networks generated from the forum have widened perspectives both on key fisheries issues and on potential opportunities, and will generate future collaboration on resolution and new ventures.

The forum began with a panel discussion on the current state of the fisheries. Michel Biron of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) spoke about the snow crab tagging experiments that he has been conducting in the region to assess the snow crab population.

Fishermen's Forum Flyer / Poster

GAMS will be hosting its second annual fishermen’s forum March 26th, 2010. This year’s title is “Moving towards sustainability in Rural Fishing Communities”.

The forum will take place Friday March 26th from 9 am to 5 pm at the NDA school auditorium in Chéticamp, Cape Breton. Registration will take place March 26th from 8 – 8:45 am in the senior’s hall (directly behind the NDA school).  A buffet lunch will also be served at the senior’s hall over the lunch break (12:30 to 1:30) with a keynote speaker presenting at that time. The keynote speaker will be announced shortly.

The forum is an opportunity for local fishing groups, researchers, provincial and federal regulators, and community leaders to meet each other and to discuss issues that directly affect both the fisheries and the communities that depend on them. The forum will promote the exchange of knowledge and experiences through panel discussions on selected topics and provide an informal setting for personal interactions and discussion.

GAMS is planning several panels of three to five presenters, each speaking for 15 to 20 minutes with a discussion period following.

The tentative panel titles are as follows:

  • The State of the Fisheries 2010: Research Perspectives on Stock Assessments
  • Natural Mortality: seal predation and other natural losses
  • Marketing Challenges:  the global market, certification and other issues
  • From the Bottom Up: community based management of fisheries
  • Resource Diversification: aquaculture and alternatives to traditional fisheries
  • Working together: increasing collaborative research opportunities

GAMS wishes to invite fishermen, community members, researchers, and students to join in this very important gathering. If you would like to reserve a spot for lunch or if you have any questions about the forum or wish to contribute your ideas please call the GAMS project coordinator Gina Stewart at 224-1623 or e-mail gams.cmag@gmail.com.
